Description
In a world filled with challenges and heartache, animals often provide a source of healing and companionship. This is the story of Sarah, a woman who found solace and purpose through fostering dogs, helping those in recovery find hope and a chance for a better life. Her journey with Dogs Matter has not only transformed her life but also the lives of many struggling with addiction. This video explores Sarah’s heartfelt story, highlighting the profound impact of animals in times of need.
The Catalyst for Change
Sarah’s journey began with the tragic loss of her son, Ethan, in 2020. Struggling to cope with the immense grief, Sarah and her husband found themselves overwhelmed with sadness and a lack of purpose. Ethan was a vibrant young man with a larger-than-life personality, deeply involved in daily life and activities with his family. Quote from Sarah: "Ethan had a personality that was larger than life. He was very caring. Every morning before school, he would help me feed the horses and clean the stalls." The sudden loss of Ethan left a void in Sarah’s life, and she found herself struggling mentally. However, the responsibility of caring for their animals provided a crucial lifeline, giving Sarah and her husband a reason to get up each day. Quote from Sarah: "My husband and I were not doing well mentally. But we had to get up every morning and feed the horses, dogs, and cats. It became a purpose and the reason we had to get up."
Discovering Dogs Matter
One night, while searching online, Sarah stumbled upon Dogs Matter, an organization dedicated to fostering dogs for people entering drug and alcohol rehabilitation. This discovery sparked a new sense of purpose in Sarah, who felt a calling to help. Quote from Sarah: "I came across Dogs Matter and started reading about it. I thought, 'This is amazing.'" Dogs Matter provides temporary foster care for dogs while their owners are in rehab, helping to alleviate the worry of losing a beloved pet during recovery. Understanding the importance of this work, Sarah decided to become a foster parent herself. Quote from Sarah: "Addictions rip away your relationships, and a lot of times, it's just you and your dog. The last thing you want to give up is that in order to get better."
The First Foster: Raider
Sarah’s first foster dog was Raider, a massive yet gentle German Shepherd. Despite his size, Raider quickly found a place in Sarah’s heart, marking the beginning of her journey as a foster parent with Dogs Matter. Quote from Sarah: "Raider was about eight feet long, the biggest dog. But he was a sweetheart, a lot of fun. I thought, 'I really love this.'" Since then, Sarah has fostered ten dogs, each bringing their own unique challenges and rewards. Her role as a foster parent involves taking pictures and videos to update the dogs’ owners in rehab, providing them with hope and encouragement.
The Impact of Fostering
Sarah’s involvement with Dogs Matter goes beyond providing temporary homes for dogs. The program’s reunions, where people in recovery are reunited with their dogs, are particularly impactful. Seeing the joy and relief on the faces of those who have completed rehab and the excitement of the dogs meeting their owners again is a powerful motivator for Sarah. Quote from Sarah: "When you do a reunion, and this person gets out of rehab, clean and happy, and they are so excited to see their dog, it makes it all worth it." Through her efforts, Sarah hopes to prevent others from experiencing the pain she endured, knowing that her work helps people stay in recovery and avoid tragic outcomes. Quote from Sarah: "For me, it's very personal. People in rehab are someone's child, so that's one more mom that doesn't have to get that phone call."
The Healing Power of Animals
For Sarah, fostering dogs is not just about helping others; it has become a crucial part of her healing process. The unconditional love and companionship that dogs provide have been a source of comfort and strength during her darkest times. Quote from Sarah: "It's the unconditional love you get every day from them, and that's what saved me." Sarah’s dedication to fostering dogs continues to provide her with purpose and fulfillment, allowing her to give back while healing her own heart.
Conclusion
Sarah’s journey with Dogs Matter is a testament to the transformative power of animals and the impact of compassion and empathy. By opening her home and heart to foster dogs, Sarah has not only helped individuals in recovery but also found a path to healing after her own loss. Her story highlights the importance of community, support, and the unwavering love of animals in overcoming life’s challenges.
God bless this woman for taking her tragedy and turning it into a triumphant cause. She will see Ethan again someday but, in the meantime, she is changing the world, two lives at a time (pet & person). Truly a testament to her beautiful spirit.
