Why can't I play this video in my browser?

To play videos through your browser on Mel's Video Of The Day!, your system must meet the following requirements:
  • Windows 2000 or higher with latest updates installed or Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
  • Chrome, Firefox 1.1+, IE 5.0+, or Safari 1.0+
  • A broadband connection with 500+ Kbps

If you're having trouble watching streaming videos, please make sure that you have a plug-in installed on your computer. Most of the videos listed in our search results are flash videos and require the Abode Flash Player plugin. You can install the Abode Flash plugin by visiting http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/.

Some of the videos listed in our search results are non-flash videos that we've indexed from the hosting site. We determine which plugin to use by looking at the file extension (.mpg, .mov, .wmv, etc) of the video. If the associated plugin is not already installed on your computer, you'll be prompted to download the plugin or player. Click here for a list of some helpful links where you can download plug-ins.

I receive an error message when trying to view a specific video. Why?

 
Content providers who submit videos to Mel's Video Of The Day! have the option to remove their videos from the search results at any time. If the content owner has removed their video content, you may receive the following message: "We're sorry, but this video may not be available. Try refreshing the page to see this video. To see more videos visit our home page."

I can't see the video portion of my content. What do I do?

 

If the video portion of the content you're trying to view is poor or doesn't appear, make sure your computer has at least a 16 MB video card with the latest drivers.

You should also make sure your display is set to 32 bit color. To update your display settings:

For PCs:

  1. Click "Start," then click "Control Panel."
  2. Double-click "Display."
  3. Click "Settings."
  4. Under "Color quality," select "Highest (32 bit)" from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click "OK."

For Macs:

  1. Click the Apple icon.
  2. Click "System Preferences."
  3. Click "Displays."

Why does the video stop playing?

 
Playback in Your Browser

If you're experiencing difficulty playing the entire video after clicking on the video's title, it may be due to your connection speed. Please note that a broadband connection with 500+ Kbps is required for continuous playback on Coolestone Video.

If your connection speed is less than 500 Kbps, we suggest that you try playing videos on another system with a higher connection speed. Or, please wait until the entire video finishes buffering before playing the video.

The video is choppy. How can I fix it?

 
If a video doesn't play continuously it may be due to your connection speed. A broadband connection with 500+ Kbps is required for continuous playback on Coolestone Video.

It's also possible that your video download speed is slow or inconsistent. In this case, you can try pausing the video until the entire stream is downloaded, then play the video.

My screen is frozen or uncontrollable. What do I do?

 

If your screen freezes or becomes uncontrollable, you may need to adjust your PC's video card settings.

First, visit your video card manufacturer's website and update your video drivers as needed. To find out which video card your computer uses:

  1. Click "Start," then click "Control Panel."
  2. Double-click "Display."
  3. Click "Settings," then click "Advanced."
  4. Click the "Adapter" tab.
  5. Click "Properties" to locate the name of your video card's manufacturer.

You may also need to reduce your display's hardware acceleration. To reduce your display's hardware acceleration:

  1. Click "Start," then click "Control Panel."
  2. Double-click "Display."
  3. Click "Settings," then click "Advanced."
  4. Click the "Troubleshoot" tab.
  5. Drag the "Hardware acceleration" slider to the left.

Any video I try to view is "temporarily unavailable." Why can't I view any videos?

If you see a QuickTime message in the playback window and are unable to play videos, make sure QuickTime isn't your default Flash player. To review and set your QuickTime preferences:

1. Open QuickTime Player.
2. Click "Edit" in the menu bar.
3. Click "Preferences," then click "QuickTime Preferences."
4. Click the "Browser" tab.
5. Click "MIME Settings."
6. In the "MIME Types" box, make sure the "Miscellaneous" option is unchecked.
7. Click "OK," "Apply," and "OK."
8. Restart your computer.
