What...is going on? Melissa: Leslie [a rescuer]
gets a message, is she interested in... hand-raising this newborn
American bully puppy? She said yes. Cleft puppies, to survive, they have to be tube-fed. He had to live in an incubator. Kane was this little guy
the size of a little bit bigger
than a Tic Tac container. He was really, really
strong initially. Leslie: I think he’s enormous. Like a bear cub. That’s him! Melissa: His eyes were
both open by the time he was
6-8 weeks [old] and he was clearly... blind in his right eye. And the other one had scarring over the top of it. And we didn’t know if he was going to be
completely blind or just half blind. And he shoulda been eating well on his own and
have a healthy appetite. But he wasn’t interested
in food at all. He would food strike
sometimes for days at a time. So he started losing weight. He wasn’t developing
physically as well as he shoulda been. Then, out of nowhere, he
started eating on his own. He would get so excited
sometimes when he would eat, his back legs would
come off the ground and he would just
hold himself up! I think that it had to
be on his own terms. He was a much physically
stronger dog than we gave him credit for. He always wanted to snuggle, but he took no garbage from the French bulldogs
that he lived with. Leslie: You tell ’em, Kane. You tell ’em. Melissa: So then we started
talking about getting him to me. And she got on a plane
and she got him here. We left the airport
and I actually had to pull over because
I couldn’t handle how much — I didn’t cry or
anything like that. We were both just so happy. He had this skin that wasn’t even
attached to his body. He was like a big ball
of Play-Doh, everything moved
and he was just like, solid, giant potato. With this skin that
moved all around him. So when Kane gets
excited for food he does this with his mouth. His ophthalmologist
suggested that the [blind] eye come
out as soon as possible. We’re at the hospital. Kaney’s about to go in
for his eye removal. He’s doing really, really well. Didn’t miss a beat. Didn’t miss a beat! He’s got really —
pretty good vision in this eye. I didn’t think it’d be possible
that Kane could be even happier. But he is. He’s very, very vocal. He’s just the best friend. He is the best friend
anyone could have.
