All the videos on my website are embedded from Youtube. From what little information I can find Youtube is testing turning off videos for certain users that are not logged into a Youtube account or using a VPN to view videos. If you have a Youtube account, please try logging in and see if you can then view the videos on https://mvotd.com. If you're using a VPN, try turning it off to view the videos. There are a few other work arounds but they are pretty confusing to use. If you have the skills you might try searching Google for "Youtube Sign in to confirm you're not a bot" for a fix. I didn't see any that looked easy. Our best hope is that Youtube completes their test and realizes this is a big mistake. Until then, please check in daily to see if you still getting the error message. Sorry it took so long to figure out what was going on with this. Mel
Description
I just rediscovered this video and was overcome by the sweetness of what happened! I knew it was special when I was watching it happen almost six years ago, but in retrospect it was even more precious because I now know how the story ends!
Mildred the tiny goat kid was one of 5 kids born to our goat Rosemary. She was weak when she arrived, unable to move or nurse. So that first night we tube fed her, gave her a shot of Bose and brought her inside. She was 99 degrees, way too cold, so we blow dried her until she warmed up....still no improvement. That night I bundled her up next to my bed just so she wouldn't die alone and fell asleep exhausted and sad…but when I woke up and picked her up out of her little box, she cried and was alive!
She couldn't nurse or bottle feed for the first three days, but we kept at regular tube feeding, gave her the old school remedy of a bit of coffee and molasses, a Vitamin B shot and some Moloxicam just in case she had any brain swelling from a tough birth.
Against all odds, she got stronger and made friends with our pug Rex who she cuddled with all day inside. Pug was an old man, and barely got off his bed before he met Mildred, but he seemed to get more active, so I think he has enjoyed the unusual company too! Every time over those first days that we tube fed her warm milk, we tried the bottle first, but she was still to weak to suck.
Pug let her share his dog bed next to the heater and Mildred cuddled up to him like he was her mama.
Then one night on her third day, when I was beginning to think it was hopeless, she started sucking!
In this video she is a week old, drinking about 3 oz a feeding and was a whopping 2 pounds! And I was overjoyed when she began leaping like crazy.
Hearing goat hooves on your kitchen floor might just be the cutest, silliest thing ever. Pug watched over her until she was strong enough to join the herd.
Because she had been away from the herd while she grew stronger, most of the goats were unsure about her place in the herd and not very nice, but one little goat Tess befriended her and eventually, when they were about a year old, we let them go to a new home together on the ocean where they would be spoiled pets without any competition from the herd. I cried and cried letting her go but knew it was best for her and we love when her owner comes and gives us updates!
Shortly after Mildred the goat left, our old pug Rex died. I like to think that not only did he save her life, but she prolonged his and gave him some comfort.
There are so many losses in farming, but when all your efforts sometimes pay off and a little one pulls through, it makes it all worth it. With some wild winter settling in, I wanted to post this a hopeful story for all those having new kids born! Sometimes we forget to share the best stories, the ones that defy all odds and make us believe in big impossible love!
