The perks of being a pirate | Tom Nash

Translator: Nawal Sharabati Auditor: Fatima Zahra El Hafa Often when I'm in the general public, A child will stare at me. And if the child is particularly brave, he will approach me asking, "Are you a pirate?" (Laughter) Then I need to respond, one more time: "Yes". (Laughter) I mean, to be honest: I have two hooks and two artificial legs, and a craving for intoxicating liquor. (Laughter) All I need is a gang of eyes and a parrot, and the picture will be complete. (Laughter) But I love being a pirate. I found many benefits because of my disability, And I'm not just talking about the money I save instead of buying gloves ... (Laughter) Or the surprisingly acceptable excuse for not perfecting chopsticks. (Laughter) I talk about the real benefits that I feel I have gained, As a result of my ordeals. When I was 19, I got sick The result was losing my arms at the elbows, My legs, And he left enough scars on my face, to provoke Freddy Krueger's jealousy. (Laughter) I may never be able to communicate in sign language, But my growing resolve and my general ability to solve problems Escalated by forced thinking To eliminate problems that most people do not face. The first lesson I learned It was right after the arduous and painful task To learn how to walk again, But I reaped the fruits for the rest of my life. It happened when I tried to climb up the sidewalk edge. As much as this work seems primitive to most of you, Going up the sidewalk is a bit challenging For those who can not move their ankle. I tried to climb up the sidewalk edge The way you've always known, forward, For long days, Without success, Until it became clear that time and effort Who invested in this attempt were inversely proportional With the benefit of its result. (Laughter) Therefore, I decided to examine the problem from a different angle. If I can't use the ankle joint To achieve the range of motion required to climb up the sidewalk, I have to use another joint, Like a hip joint. So, I rotated my body so that it was perpendicular to the edge of the sidewalk I raised my feet on the side, I was immediately able to climb. Within five minutes, No ladder was safe from my progress. (Laughter) On that very day, I climbed ladders of three series of steps, And I was very surprised, too. Except that I didn't realize how to get off again. (Laughter) It was a long weekend. (Laughter) In my previous life as a physically capable person, I was a guitar player. I was a good musician, But I really didn't go further. I've never formed a band, or played a lot on live broadcasts. Nevertheless, music was my passion, And when I lost my arms, The idea that music may no longer be part of my life Crucially challenged my desire to survive. However, it was the thinking that appeared Immediately after my discharge from the hospital: "If Ray Charles could play the piano while he was blind like a bat, Let us work out a solution to the guitar problem. " So, I consulted an engineer, I designed a mobile system that would hook my left hook, And I designed another rack-picker system that would hook my right hook. If this works, I would be able to play open guitar on my stone like a sleigh. After weeks of attempts and modifications, I finally had it again to play the guitar, I came back where I was before I lost my hands ... My nuisance complaints are being issued against my neighbors, of course. (Laughter) But this time, additional measures were taken. I formed a band with my friends. We composed songs and recorded them. We even played a musical show for a real audience. Not as big as this audience. (Laughter) But on the bud it was only a small step, However, it was a great leap from what I achieved when I was healthy. Whereas, the re-learning of every movement was ever refined It may seem like a very important task ... And believe me, it was so in the short term ... However, this had a positive effect On the path I have reached in my life in terms of everything else. It not only transformed my ability to solve problems, But I also felt I was more realist, And less sensitive to obstacles, More patient in some cases, And about the capabilities of people magically To give up their seats for me on public transport. (Laughter) Minor obstacles began to fade in comparison With the challenges I had previously overcome, Which allowed me to take a calm and thoughtful way to meet these challenges, And keep it in its proper framework And sometimes even find new and improved ways to overcome them. The benefit of not focusing on negatives And only think about the task that concerns me It has become a truism. It even encouraged me to pursue some of the most accomplished career paths Which would otherwise be unpalatable. Who would have thought the job would be right for me May include precise procedures for an electronic machine To choose and organize dancing music for people in hard-to-reach places Under the influence of wines. (Laughter) not me. So in the competition field where music curators refine their profession relentlessly, Struggling to get musical performances, sending examples of their club works, My friend and I took a different method, And we started to establish our own night club, We hired ourselves as music curators. (Laughter) Suddenly we have a place in the headlines. (Laughter) When we started that night club, I didn't really appreciate anything in coordinating music. It was the first time I was behind the music player on the opening night, In front of hundreds of people. I had just learned where the play button was. (Laughter) However, having previously encountered many final warnings, One has to be astute to adapt to new situations. That night became The longest weekly club night in Sydney. As music curators, we are playing the biggest Australian music festivals. And in the end, either I learned quickly, Or the club standards have really deteriorated. (Laughter) Being close to death can be an educational experience. To be sure, one's priorities are somewhat subject to some form of rearrangement Immediately after that. It is also a fact that some of these are priorities You may experience an increased sense of urgency. But something else is more accomplished It is the banality of our importance and our own conscience. It is an understanding of the keenness of self-awareness To prevent one from sharing opportunities It should lead everyone to accept the risks that they would not otherwise face. We are only a flash on the timeline of the universe, right? Let us act on this. It was the ideas I presented today Extracted from some bad conditions, yes, But it stays still in the life of anyone who wishes to exploit it. If we all understood that we have rare weaknesses, And if we are honest about what it is, We will be able to learn to make better use of it, Whether it is going up the sidewalk edge or fear of sales reporting Or the inability to manage personal financial adequately ... Look at that person ... (Laughter) There is the ability to learn and adapt, And even the ability to renew an instinctive response to challenges. The ordeal is good, It has the potential to make you stronger. And at least, You can scare children if you look like a pirate. thank you. (Applause and cheers)
