Description

Do you need a little goat pajama party? I do! It is hard not to smile watching week old goats frolic in sunflower pjs!

Years ago Stella Hamilton kindly designed and sent us the pattern for goat pajamas, specially sized for Nigerian Dwarf goats when they are first born. When goats are born they need to keep their body temperature up to keep their sucking reflex going and be able to nurse. This is especially essential in the first few hours so that they can get plenty of their dam's first milk (colostrum). While humans get some immunity from their mom's placenta while in the womb, goats get no immunity in advance and get it entirely from the first milk in their first days of life. So farmers can use heat lamps, warming areas, coats, sweaters or pajamas to keep newborn livestock warm on nights when temps fall below freezing. Most of the time their mother does a great job keeping them warm all on her own. But we have been thankful on occasion to have options to assist in keeping their body temperature up. Since that first gift from Stella, many others have gifted the goats coats and sweaters and pjs! (Jill Hanson, Mary Ellen Doyle, Marian Starkey, Paula Kuzontkoski and many others!) And since we have quite a collection, now we sometimes break them out just for fun! This was one of those times! This video Made By Harry Hods when he stopped by recently seemed like the perfect way to thank you all.
