Description

Kidding season ended with the birth of Fern's 3 kids yesterday morning. 61 total babies! 54 days in this kidding season. 23 incredibly sweet mamas. 33 doelings and 28 bucklings. We assisted with 4 births. We did not miss a single mother's kidding. (One stillborn to Rosemary and losing Baba were low points for sure), but overall such a healthy happy hoppy kidding season! We feel so lucky to have shared it all with you thoughtful animal lovers. Many of you across the world know every member of the herd!! They can feel that huge love! Now we get to enjoy them for 8 weeks until they go to new home sin pairs or threes. At 2-3 weeks the kids sleep in their own stalls at night to learn to eat grain and drink water. It gives the mamas a little break too. (They have a couple stalls but most of them cram into one so they can be together). In the morning they are set free and in a herd of 30 adults and 61 babies, somehow find their mother lightning quick! The noise quickly turns to happy nursing and then transitions to a day of enjoying the pasture. Some farms separate the mamas and babies at birth. I can not imagine doing that. Mostly because it seems cruel to the goat, but also selfishly, I love watching the relationships between generations play out, again and again, each morning. It is one of my favorite things about sharing our life with goats. Thanks for visiting farm friends.
