This video follows the journey of a wildlife photographer capturing his dream photo of sleeping squirrels. The narrator, who has spent years observing red squirrels in Sweden, documents the process of designing a special box to photograph these elusive creatures while they sleep.
Background and Inspiration
Capturing the Perfect Photo: Inspired by a photograph by Neil Anderson of a sleeping squirrel, the narrator sets out to create a similar image. His fascination with squirrels began four years ago when he started photographing them in the wild.
Challenges: The main challenge was figuring out how to photograph squirrels while they slept without disturbing them. This required designing a special box that would house the camera and provide a comfortable environment for the squirrels.
Designing the Squirrel Box
Research and Planning: The narrator conducted extensive research on squirrel boxes and received advice from other photographers. He wanted a box that would accommodate a large camera, provide enough light, and be appealing to squirrels.
Features of the Box: The final design included multiple entrances, a shelf for the camera, and a section for nesting material. It was insulated to protect the squirrels from extreme temperatures.
Camera Setup: The narrator used a Rio Link Go Ranger PT camera for monitoring and a Canon R5 for high-quality photos. The setup allowed remote control of the cameras to avoid disturbing the squirrels during photography sessions.
Construction and Testing
Building the Box: With help from a neighbor, the narrator constructed the box using solid wood to ensure durability and insulation. He tested the camera and lighting setup in a prototype before installing them in the final box.
First Success: After completing the box, three squirrels moved in within a few weeks, allowing the narrator to capture his dream photo of sleeping squirrels. The footage and images showed the squirrels cozy and comfortable in their new home.
Conclusion
The project was a success, and the narrator is thrilled with the photos captured. His dream photo of sleeping squirrels will be featured on the cover of his 2025 red squirrels calendar. He looks forward to documenting more of the squirrels' lives, particularly the raising of kits, in future projects. The narrator expresses gratitude to those who supported his work and encourages others to explore wildlife photography using similar technology.
