Video Description:

A beach day in Cabo took an unexpected turn when two sisters spotted something strange flashing in the distance. At first they thought it couldn’t be real.

As they got closer, they realized the creatures struggling in the shallow water were oarfish, a rare deep-sea species that almost never appears near the surface. One of the sisters quickly jumped in to help, working with people on the beach to push the fish back toward deeper water.

But the moment got even stranger. Just as they finished helping the first one, they spotted another oarfish near the shore. Seeing even one is extremely rare. Seeing two in the same place is almost unheard of.

Afterward, they learned there have only been a handful of sightings along that coastline over the past few hundred years. While some people call them “doomsday fish,” scientists say there’s no evidence they’re linked to earthquakes or tsunamis.

    JUST WOW!!!!!!

  • Marty

Read about them in Wikipedia. It was pretty fascinating. Those girls, as noble as their efforts might have been, was probably for naught. They live in VERY deep water so if they get to the top, they usually will die eventually due to "depressurisation". The strangest thing about this one is that there are no recorded instances of two of them together at the surface they usually find only one. There have only been 20 or so sightings in the past 20 years or so. So, it is very rare. Thanks Mel! I learned something today which is my goal EVERY DAY!

It was an Oar Fish.... no sea serpent!

It kind of bothers me: What difference did it make, what it was other than a lifeform? Kudos to the sister who knew she had to try to get it back in the water.
    Thanks Mel.

Wow! I've never seen one of those before. I'm glad they got them back in the ocean. It makes me wonder how many of God's creation I haven't seen yet.

  • Lynne Henderson

Wow! Proof positive that there are some really wonderful people in this world and these girls were some of them. Amazing.

First, it took women to save the animal(s). What does that say about the men on the beach? Yeah. Pathetic sissies. Congrats to the gals with courage. Momma raised you right. Second, I hope they get the photos/video to an aquatic agency and maybe get some true details about the fish. They were fascinating to see. Third, it has been said that there are things so deep in the ocean, we do not have vessels capable of withstanding the pressure to dive that deep, that we have never seen or obviously been able to document. Perhaps this fish is one of those that live deep in the ocean and inadvertently beached. Truly interesting. Thanks for sharing it!

Weret they able to return them to the sea? Were they dying? Did they survive?

"Jane, let's get off this beach and back into the water. This place smell from suntan lotion. No, Jane, I am not checking out the bikinis! Now, let's get out of here!"

  • Sandi Angel

I thank God for those young girls-making sure it got back into the water. NO animal should ever suffer, and they certainly did the right thing. :)
