Description
In this touching story, we meet Papy, a resilient and charming dog who was abandoned by a hunter at the age of 17 because he was going blind. Papy's journey from a neglected hunting dog to a cherished family member showcases the power of compassion and the transformative effect of love and care. Natalie, Papy’s new owner, shares their heartwarming story, highlighting the bond they have formed and the joy Papy brings to her life.
The Rescue
Papy was once a skilled hunting dog, praised by his previous owner for his abilities. However, as Papy aged and his vision deteriorated, he was deemed no longer useful and was abandoned. Fortunately, Papy's story took a positive turn when Natalie, a dog fosterer working for a shelter in Spain, was introduced to him. Quote from Natalie: “When he was already 17 years old... the hunter said he was a really good hunting dog, one of my best ones, but he was going blind, so I didn't need him anymore.” Natalie was drawn to Papy's plight and decided to foster him, ensuring he didn't spend his last days in the shelter. Despite his advanced age and health issues, Papy quickly adapted to his new environment, thanks to better food and medical care, including physiotherapy for his arthritis. Quote from Natalie: “I will foster him so he doesn't have to have his last days in the shelter.”
Papy’s Adaptation and Recovery
Papy's resilience shone through as he adjusted to his new life. With improved nutrition and supplements, his condition began to improve, allowing him to enjoy daily walks and explore his surroundings. Although blind, Papy navigated the world with his acute sense of smell and hearing. Quote from Natalie: “We fed him, I think, better food. He went to a physiotherapist for his arthritis, he got some supplements, he's adapted really well.” Natalie discovered that Papy had untreated fractures in his legs that had healed improperly. Despite these challenges, Papy remained active and participated in longer walks, showcasing his determination and zest for life. Quote from Natalie: “He still goes on my longer walks with me every day, which is really amazing.”
A New Life with Natalie
Papy quickly became a beloved member of Natalie’s family. He claimed a spot on the couch as his own, finding comfort in his new home. His joyful personality earned him the nickname "smiley Grandpa," and he charmed everyone he met. Quote from Natalie: “He has his spot on the couch, that's really his spot.” Natalie fell in love with Papy and decided to adopt him permanently. Her wish for Papy to forget his difficult past and enjoy his remaining years in comfort and love became a reality. Quote from Natalie: “I really wish that he would have been with me since when he was a puppy so that he would have had a better life.”
Celebrating Life and Love
As Papy approaches his 20th birthday, Natalie reflects on the time they have spent together. Despite initially feeling that their time was limited due to Papy’s age, Natalie now confidently believes that Papy will continue to thrive and bring joy to those around him. Quote from Natalie: “Now he's been with me for almost three years, he's going to celebrate his 20th birthday in October.” Papy’s story is a testament to the transformative power of love, showing that even the most neglected animals can find happiness and fulfillment when given a second chance. Quote from Natalie: “Every day is the best day for Papy, he's making up for all the pets.” Papy's journey from abandonment to a loving home highlights the importance of compassion and the profound impact of adoption. His story serves as a reminder of the joy and companionship that senior dogs can bring to our lives, proving that it's never too late for a new beginning.
