Added I remember my father going out on the streets of our small town making sure that all the towns lights were extinguished during an air raid drill. He didn't serve in the armed services because his job was considered necessary for the good of the nation. His father and all of his his brothers were coal miners in PA.

Added So interesting to me. People back then were a lot "nittier and grittier" than people today. You could see on their faces that life wasn't easy, they had just gone through the Great Depression and now war. Yet, this "Greatest Generation" built America and made it the greatest nation on Earth!! Thanks for the pictures! As someone said, "A picture is worth a thousand words".
