When we think of portraits from the Victorian era, most of the time we imagine boring and depressing faces, patiently waiting for their picture to be taken. This is part due to the slow camera process and because of how smiling in the Edwardian and Victorian era was looked down upon. However, not all people followed the rules, and despite their technological constraints, we were able to find a few gems on the internet showing people smiling and goofing around for a picture even in the 19th century. For example this Union soldier from the American Civil War clowning around for the camera, sometime in 1863. Or this Victorian lady making a piggy nose with her finger while crossing her eyes. Here a lady is pulling a funny face as she has her picture taken. And many, many more...
