The groundhog, also called the woodchuck, whistle-pig, and land-beaver, is one of the most recognized animals in North America, but most people only think about it once a year. In this video, we break down 25 groundhog facts covering everything from their extraordinary hibernation physiology to their surprising role in human medical research.
Topics include groundhog hibernation heart rate, burrow structure and depth, the woodchuck name origin, Groundhog Day accuracy statistics, groundhog behavior in the wild, what woodchucks actually eat, how long groundhogs live, and why these animals matter far beyond February 2.
Whether you're curious about woodchuck facts, groundhog biology, or just want to understand this animal past the Punxsutawney Phil legend, this video covers it all with accurate, research-backed information.

Hi Mel , I have been a gardener for 65 years . I have taught people to garden and I have a radio show on gardening . The number one thing that discourages new gardeners and causes them to give it up are ground hogs . They borough under fences and will decimate your crops .
Local farmers welcome hunters to come and shoot as many as they can !!!
When you look into a young child's face that has their first garden destroyed by a" whistle pig "
you will have a much different opinion of these creatures .
And that's not taking into account the farmers who have been injured or even killed when a tractor hits one of their boroughs and rolls over on them , or have a building collapse because ground hogs undermine them .
I enjoy your videos but - This one made me bristle
Stay Safe ! C. G.
very cool. thanks Mel
Fascinating . . . I had no idea that much was going on with them -- like, all year long, they are super busy being groundhogs. Dens with separate compartments, who would have thought that. Architects. Great video. Thanks Mel.
Very interesting for all that they accomplish. I like the fact that they have many rooms in their burrows including one for waste.
Thanks, Mel! Very interesting!
I was surprised to find out that out of 25 facts, I already knew none of them. Interesting video!
Very interesting video on the life of Groundhogs!
Well, now I know more about these cute animals! Thank you for sharing Mel!
Mos interesting, but I've never seen one - as yet! Thanks, Mel!
