Video Description:

Backyard birds hear your voice long before you notice their reaction. Chickadees, robins, sparrows, crows, and other wild birds may respond in tiny ways the second you speak outside.

A chickadee turns its head. A sparrow freezes in the hedge. A crow on a wire adjusts its position. None of them look alarmed, but all of them heard you.

In this video, we reveal what birds do when they hear your voice, how they react in the first few seconds, and why familiar human voices may change the way birds behave in your yard.

I went to summer school, a short walk from my dwelling to the campus. There was a red-winged blackbird on a wire in a particular spot. Every day. After the first week, I'd say 'hello' as I approached. He would serenade until I was out of earshot. Very Cool.
    Thanks Mel!

How interesting to learn. My goodness they assess quite quickly. I feed the birds so I will pay close attention to their behavior after watching this video.

A male cardinal would call from the alley wall in NY one day. I threw some food out.
The next day it was in a tree ten feet closer---called the same way. I fed it again. The next day it was in the top branch of the tree just outside, calling toward my window and stayed while I threw out food.
The next year it returned and called from the top branch the first day.
    Also the next year!

Wow - who knew! My only contacts with birds are mostly with crows and I'll have to start watching their reactions now. Thank you for all this knowledge.

This was GREAT!! I have a back yard habitat. and I do know that if it's just me--they come around, etc. but the minute a friend stops bye they won't come. Every morning I talk to them when I put the food and water out--calling them "Come and eat girls." WOW--I love this, but I don't know how to get more. The speaker said subscribe to this--I'll look somewhere else. THANKS FOR SHARING MEL!!!
