Video Description:

Fireflies lighting up the night might look simple, but behind that soft glow is one of the most efficient natural systems ever discovered.

In this video, we break down exactly how fireflies generate light, from the molecules involved to the specialized structures inside their bodies. You’ll also learn how they control their flashes, why their light produces almost no heat, and what purpose this glow actually serves in the wild.

I have been binging "The History of Simple Things" :-) I blame it on Mel. Love ya buddy! I enjoyed learning about the biology of these special creatures. God created, then encouraged man to reverse engineer through science. Acknowledge the source, and all will go well with you. Scientists (many) refuse to acknowledge the creator. Which is a shame. But eventually they will come to the end of themselves and admit, there is a creator.

Thanks Mel . I have always loved "Lightning Bugs " ( That's what us " Yinzers" in Western Pa. call them) - But I had no clue how they made that light !! I always thought it was cruel how some people capture and abuse them !!

I was told that In the U.S. fireflies are not seen in all the states west of the Rocky Mountains.
Is this true? and if so why is that? I assume they are not in Hawaii or Alaska.
I have lived 50 years in northern CA and no fireflies.
I miss seeing them from my youth in Ohio.

I love fireflies, hope they don't disappear forever.

I love your comment, Marty. In order to believe that God is the great creator, one must first believe God's written word, the bible. Then and only then, can one understand how this great universe came into being. I never could understand why science complicates God's creation.

    Very interesting!

    Very good explanation!

VERY interesting, thanks Mel! As I watched the video, I kept waiting for the narrator to say that one thing that I KNEW he was going to say. He said, about halfway through, "Fireflies have evolved ......" Yep! He said it! Why not just admit that God made these creatures and they didn't "evolve"? I don't understand why science can't just see this wonderful creation that God has given us as a wonderful gift? It was fascinating as well as beautiful.

You should have said something about the various species of fireflies. In Trinidad they are also called 'click beetles, their light is brighter than those in the US and Canada, and are somewhat bigger and brighter. But this is a good explanation.
