This summer, I was able to travel back in time to one of my all-time favorite places. And even though I had never been to this exact place before... I still stand by my words.
Growing up, some of my favorite childhood memories were made in the mountains of Eagle, Colorado, visiting my Uncle Ed’s.
Somehow, it had been more than 10 years since I’d been back. The horses and property weren’t the same as before, and I guess, neither was I. But right away, I could feel what hadn’t changed… the same magic I remembered from when I was a kid, was still there. Like it had been waiting.
Most of the time, a song comes first. When it’s ready, I carve out the time and go looking for a place quiet enough to take it. This time around, I didn’t have to go looking for either. I found myself with stillness in both the air and on the clock, in this beautiful place, with the sun about ready to make its last, best stop before heading home to bed.
Now… What do I play?
It’s always been pretty easy for me to be a believer in the possibility of magic, and that things happen for a reason. I’ve also come to realize that maybe seeing that magic might be more a matter of choice. And maybe, consciously or not, we get to choose the reasons and meanings sometimes, too…
I’m not quite sure if this was the song because it was somehow supposed to be, or if it became the right song simply because it’s what I chose in that moment… (a bit of both)?
Whatever the reason, it seems fitting now that, at just the right time, one of my longtime favorite songs found its way into one of my longtime favorite places.
I’ve always heard this song as a break-up song — one of letting go, lined with hope. I still hear that now, but maybe I feel more of surrender in it? Almost a reminder that when things get heavy, it might be time to unpack the sentimental suitcase that my heart can default to at times, without even realizing.
Relearning that setting something down doesn’t erase the miles you carried it, and it doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth the weight. Even if it doesn’t end up reaching the final destination with you… not everything is meant to! Maybe sometimes one thing is only meant to get you to a certain point, to make sure it leads you to the next great thing, or the next great love.
None of it wasted. It all has it’s reasons and meanings…
Because in one way or another, it all ends up being a part of our journey on this wild and beautiful planet -- a fractal of who we are. For better or worse…
(I’d like to think maybe we have a say in that, too).
Thank you, Ed and Rachel for letting us stop and visit. It was so amazing and so great to see you (as always♥️)!
And thank you for letting me sing to your horses (and people ☺️).
And a special thanks to horses, in order of appearance: Billy, Dang, and Comet. A fine audience!????
Thank you for listening. And for reading. And for being here. I love you.
