I colorized, fully restored, and crafted the sound design for this rare footage documenting daily life in Detroit, Michigan, in the late 1930s. The film captures everyday scenes of the city, including local streets, people, automobiles, service stations, and Briggs Stadium, with details such as 1937 Michigan license plates helping establish its historical period. Preserved as a home movie, this footage offers a fascinating glimpse into ordinary life in Detroit during 1937–1939.
GAS STATION LOCATION: 1:11 The gas station building on the northeast corner of E. Warren Ave. & Maryland St. was demolished sometime between 2023 and 2025, and can be seen (heavily altered) in earlier Google St. views. The building across the street at 1:42, center screen and seen again behind the red car at 2:08 still exists at 15033 E. Warren. The laundry building just south of the intersection at 2:43 survives at 5015 Maryland, as does Sander's dry cleaning building at 2:50 on the southwest corner at 15103 E. Warren (Thank you, Scott, for this useful information.)
Video Restoration Process:
FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
Image resolution enhanced up to 4K quality
Improved video sharpness and brightness with my own AviSynth scripts
Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
Sound design created for immersive atmosphere
Full restoration: stabilization, denoise, cleaning, and deblurring made with my own AviSynth and VapourSynth scripts
Please, be aware that colorization colors are not real and fake, colorization was made only for the ambiance and do not represent real historical data.
