I'm from Chicago. All I could think of was this is how my folks (1921 & 1919) and all those folks I knew that are long since gone had to deal with life as they went about every day. Food lines. Guys playing cards or shooting dice to kill the time. So many men just wanted work. Eating bacon grease on toast cuz that's all they had. I remember my grandma (1901) railing about that. Stunning to see it on film. 1929 the market crashed. It was bad all over. Dilapidated, dingy, kids didn't have toys to really speak of so they found a can and played with dirt. Capitalism pulled us all out of that. My kids and grandkids have no clue whatsoever of what they went through. We have quite the ungrateful generations around us.
