Blood Moon Pack Pups in Spring 2023 #Video

We figured this footage of the Blood Moon Pack pups in their den from last year might start some folks week off on a positive note! The den was nothing more than a tipped over medium-sized jack pine…not much of a den!

And this is a fitting video because we are yet again at the start of the pup-rearing season—the beginning of the biological year for wolves! Indeed, most wolves in our area have just given birth as April 11 is average date pups are born.

The road to adulthood for these pups is a long route and most of the pups born recently will not see their first birthday. But some will

For example none of the pups in this video are still alive today. We don’t know why they didn’t make it but suspect starvation for at least a few pups who looked to be in rough shape last fall.

That said, GPS-collar data shows the Blood Moon Pack has already had pups this year and we look forward to seeing if this year’s litter fares better than last years.
