The snow leopard is a species of large cat that is native to the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia, ranging from eastern Afghanistan, the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau to southern Siberia, Mongolia and western China. Its scientific name is Panthera uncia, but is also known as the ounce, irbis, and the "Ghost of the Mountains". Recognised throughout the world for their beautiful fur and elusive behaviour, snow leopards are perfectly adapted to the cold, barren landscape of their high-altitude home, but human threats have created an uncertain future for the cats and scientists estimate that there may only be between 3,920 and 6,390 snow leopards left in the wild. Although they are legally protected in most range countries, they are threatened by poaching and habitat destruction due to infrastructural development projects.
