This is the Holy Grail! An SS L-78 396-375 hp 4-speed with gauges and power windows! Not only is it #s matching but it is documented with the build sheet! It was born like you see it according to the documentation, cowl tag, #s and codes. It was even born these colors. It underwent a body off frame, rotisserie restoration to factory specs.
EXTERIOR: The body is laser straight with no rust or damage. The panels fit square and flush. Repainted its original code 72 Hugger Orange. It's smooth as glass, only a few very minor flaws. The black SS stripe on the tailgate is painted the correct satin black. The vinyl top, weatherstrips, chrome and stainless trim were replaced. It also has the optional SS stripe down the sides. It's sits proud on a set of 14 inch SS wheels with reproduction Firestone Wide Oval tires.
INTERIOR: It's restored like factory new from the carpet to the headliner. The star of the show is the 4-speed on the floor. It's the correct Muncie shifter for a bench seat. It also has rare power windows and a tilt column with a rosewood wheel. The dash area was completely restored and has the factory gauge cluster with the correct 6,500 redline tachometer. We just installed a new retro stereo and speakers. The upholstery, carpet, headliner, door panels were replaced. It has the correct jack and polyglass spare behind the seat.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: It has the legendary 375 horsepower L-78 396 motor. The codes, dates and VIN number match this car making it the original motor. It is completely stock including correct rectangular port heads with the matched GM aluminum intake, correct Holley dual feed carb and even the complete smog pump system. It has correct deep groove pulleys so the belts don't fly off at high RPMs. Reproduction spring clamp battery cables, reproduction hoses and clamps. Features include power steering and power brakes. The washers are hooked up, it has under hood lamp and hood insulation. The metal surfaces are all painted nicely.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: The tailgate functions properly. Inside the bed is clean, solid metal painted orange.
UNDERSIDE: The body was removed from the chassis and flipped on a rotisserie. The underbody is immaculate metal that was prepped and sprayed in a smooth satin black finish. The chassis was then disassembled, stripped, and painted. It was completely rebuilt as it was put back together. So, all the suspension and steering were rebuilt. The brakes were rebuilt, lines, hoses, e-brake cables replaced. It has disc in front. The fuel system was all replaced including the tank. It has a factory type dual exhaust. Looking up at the motor it is spotless Chevy Orange, correct starter, and fuel pump. It has it's VIN number matching Muncie M20 4-speed. It's been restored and the linkage looks like new. Rebuilt drive shaft goes back to the original 12 bolt rear end with 3.55 gears.
SERVICE: We ran the car through our shop for a thorough inspection. We repaired the reverse lights, replaced the shifter, repaired the blower, installed a retro stereo and speaker, cleaned the headlight switch, gave it a front end alignment and adjusted the e-brake.
I really do consider this the ultimate 1969 El Camino! It's the biggest motor available mated to a 4-speed and it has some great options. The difference is this is documented. Sky's the limit on what it could really be worth to the right collector.
I, Jay Grams, take pride in personally writing the descriptions for virtually every car for about the last 30 years now. A significant amount of effort goes into fact checking. What I am offering is my professional impression of the vehicle. Our salesmen are happy to assist with descriptions and making sure your questions are answered. One great suggestion is letting us do a walk around video that explains the car's condition in detail. **These cars are displayed in a museum.
