That sure does bring back memories--ones I would like to forget!!
Oh my goodness . . . I don't know how many times I rolled my eyes during this. I remember others working that column H shifter when I was little. They were all tanks. Hoods and trunks just went on forever. Sitting in the middle of the front seat. All the ashtrays . . . LOL. The Wing windows. Absolutely loved watching this. What a childhood and then in my youth . . .
I am still a kickass parallel parker. Recently at a Walmart, I parallelled and an employee was behind me on her break, we got out at the same time. She said I cannot believe you did that in one move!
My first car was an old VW Beetle convertible - four on the floor manual transmission. Good thing because it wouldn't always start - so I had to pus start it often. Loved that car!
I remember some of these but I learned to drive in 1972, so cars were a bit different.
My dad taught me how to drive a tractor, then a 4-speed Volkswagen when I was 10 years old, in 1961. I also drove our pickup with a 3 on the tree when I was 10. Dad let me drive around town at an early age as long as he was in the front seat with me. My dad was 6'3" so I had to drive sitting on the edge of the seat, so I could reach the pedals. There were no seat belts in those days. Thanks, Mel, for the trip down memory lane. Aw, those were the days.

i took drivers ed. at high school in 1963. We used a Volkswagen Beetle, 4 speed Manual. Those were the DAYS!

I grew up on a farm, and I learned to drive tractors, combines, hay balers and trucks, at an early age. Later on, when I was a junior in high school, I took driver's ed and learned the right way. I'll be 88 this year. Guess you could say, I've been driving something for over 75 years. And yes, I have trouble learning the operation and options on our newer vehicles. I know that someday I'll have to hang it up and depend on others for transportation but I'm not ready for that now. Oh, by the way, seems there's a bunch of us oldies still out there, gear jamming. Good luck and hang tough people.

I remember all of this. We didn’t even have seat belts until they later became an option if you wanted them.
Good reminder of automobile history which I remember well! Glad that I got to experience most of these firsthand.
