Ever wondered what life was like before air conditioning? In this nostalgic look back, we explore how Americans found relief during the long, hot summers of the past. From shaded porches and open windows to ice deliveries and early “swamp coolers,” people used creativity and common sense to stay cool when the heat set in. I remember well using a fan to exhaust day air from the house at night and being able to keep the interior below 80 for most of the day when outside could be 100 in Walla Walla Washington. The house had a wrap around porch with extended eves providing shade.

I grew up with the front porch being our gathering place in the evenings, my upstairs hot, we had a refrigerator but it had a very small freezer unit, I wouldn't trade those days at all :)

Remember "Rear Window"? That couple pulled their mattress out on the fire escape to sleep!
(Then pulled it in quickly when it rained!)

Sure brought back memories of growing up in Texas in the 50’s! Didn’t really mind the heat as no one had ac or whole house fans. We did finally get a swamp box and that he
    Ped a lot!

I remember this like it was yesterday. Going to church on Sunday in a suit with shirt and tie, playing outside until the lights came on in the street. Never knew we had it so good. What wonderful memories of famililies actually communicating with each other. Those were the days.

What I remember the most is having to wear a girdle when I dressed up on Sundays for church. I dressed on the second floor and would stand in front of a window fan to get into the darn girdle. I also remember getting out of the bathtub and starting to sweat before I ever left the bathroom. Again - 2nd story bathtub. I was 15 when I decided to leave Indiana when I was an adult.

We grew up in the 50-60's when air-conditioning was leaving your windows open.

Very thankful for having central A/C the past few years.

    Thankful for air conditioning!

I remember no a/c -- in school in particular. Those huge windows wide open. At home, we eventually got a window unit. Then another and after three units, strategically place, it was heaven. But boy did the folks bitch about the electric bill. Thank God for Mr. Westinghouse. We managed the heat and certainly appreciated the a/c. God is good. He will get you through anything. Just ask Him.

I'm 67 and I grew up in Auburndale, Florida and it would get hot!! My parents couldn't afford A/C so we had an attic fan which kept the house cooler after evening came. However, and I don't care who argues with me, but I don't remember but a few days where the high was over 90. Most of the time it was in the upper 80's in July and August. It is now regularly almost to 100 and sometimes a few days over. It is hotter now than it was growing up! My folks didn't get their first A/C until I got married and moved off.

I know first hand of those days = I LIVED THEM. to this day I still live them since I still do not have A/C. And I live in Florida !! I'm 81 and still go out in the heat to work my little farm ranch.
I've been out in 100 degree heat pulling weeds. You do what you have to do and thank God He keeps you going.

We had a whole house fan before we had air conditioning.

  • Merridy

    I sure do remember :-)

  • Leonard

We used to go to the basement to cool off in Western Missouri (Misery)!

  • Mary Jane

I was fortunate to grow up with A/C. i was told that my family would go to the beach on really hot nights and sleep on the sand.

  • Johnny

I lived at that time in The West Indies, so heat didn't bother us too much. e just dressed in light clothes, or went to the nearby beach. There was no winter there, remember?
Cheers, and keep up the good work!

I don't have to ask what life was like before air conditioning. Been there. Done that. In fact, spent 6 weeks this summer doing it again as the new rental agency doesn't have any HVAC techs on speed dial.
    Thanks Mel.

    So many memories
