Description

It's good to be alive and well. This short video shows the flooding river where our road used to be. The small river used to be to the right of the trees. This video was taken by someone and posted on Youtube a few days ago. The water has gone way done now. The local guys have built a temporary load that is passable with a tough 4 wheel drive. My son and I got out yesterday and went to Elizabethton, Tn for supplies. 19E is the main road from my house to Tn. The first 8 miles looks like a war zone. Cars and tractors and all kinds of objects along the river bank. One house slide off the side of a hill. I heard the man got out but his wife didn't make it. 19E is passable for a short distance then 1/2 the road will be gone. Get around that and drive another short distance and the other half of the road is gone. Then once we got out about 10 miles to a little town called Elk Park, NC things started looking back to normal. There were sections going into Tn. that were bad. We have Duke Power. They sent an email saying the power would be back on by Saturday. Unless they have some kind of "Magic Wires" I don't see how that could possibly happen. We still have no power except when our 25 year old generator is running. We got gas yesterday and a cousin brought some a coupled of days ago. We run the generator log enough to hopefully keep the freeze cool. Then I get a few minutes to get on the computer. We did get cell service back late yesterday and have been able to check in with our friends and family. One couple that live in Elk Valley, NC had about water up to their deck which is about 8 feet off the ground. The water surrounded their house and washed away their car and everything else that was in their yard. We spoke by phone yesterday, they seemed OK but really shaken.  Like I said I'm doing fine and my family are all OK. It's going to be a while before things get back to any where near normal. I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts, prayers and support doing this trying time. The out pour has been amazing. I will update again in a few days. THANK YOU! Mel. 10/03/2024

If you have Facebook, here's a link to lot of pictures someone took of the damage in along the 19E and a couple of side roads.

  • Loretta Brehm Added We Katrina survivors understand, are praying for young will continue indefinitely. This is a life-altering situation that in time will help but never will be forgotten. You should let friends like us know your needs and that of your community so that we can help. As your recovery progresses, let us know your needs at different stages. Just sending things and you are not yet set up with a place to put it makes it more confusing.
  • APRIL Added Heart breaking!...I dealt with similar conditions after Super Storm Sandy hit us here in Jersey....It was in November during winter...15 straight days of no power, no water, no heat...The temperature in my house stayed at about 36 degrees...If we left the house we had to be careful getting around the downed trees and powerlines...I know somewhat of you're all going through down there...My thoughts and prayers are with you all...
  • Lovey Added Glad you and your family are okay and things are getting better. Hope it continues that way.

I am so happy you and your family are safe. I know you are praying, same as us for all those hurt and missing.
