- Linda Georgee Added Peaceful times. Families together for dinner and supermarkets and stores closed on Sundays. Kids had respect for family's and elders. Stealing car hubcaps were a big crime, and don't get caught smoking in the school bathrooms and at home. Miss those happy, simple times.☹️
- Tom Linton Added WOW! Thank you for sharing this one Mel. Even though I grew up in the late 50"s and 60"s, i do remember my Lincoin logs and drive-in"s! That is where we saw Mary Poppins.
- Joan Added A blast from the past!!
- Andrew J. Dick Added During the fifties, horse-drawn wagons were standard. In our neighborhood, the Potman frequently had a workbench attached to the back of his wagon. He and his horse would travel the cobblestone roads of Pittsburgh and repair any pot you might have in the kitchen or exchange yours for one of his already repaired pots for a nominal fee. The Ragman was another tradesman who sold different types of rags. (no paper towels) The hucksters were different. They generally had two horses pulling a large wagon with side rails where teenage boys sat. They could jump on and off at will carrying a variety of fruits and vegetables in large baskets. They went up and down the street hawking their wares. As I recall, they had an abrasive manner about them. We didn't have much money, so my sisters and I would comb the areas where someone might discard their pop bottles and return them for a two-cent deposit. If we were lucky, five bottles would get us another bottle of coke. The cold bottle of coke reminds me of the Iceman. We didn't have refrigerators, only an icebox. His horse-drawn wagon carried only large ice blocks that he would chisel to the correct size of your box.
