Lyrics: "Brave in the Sky" – A Memorial Day Tribute
The breeze is quiet, the flags are high,
Children laugh while eagles fly.
But somewhere deep, a silence stays,
For those who gave their yesterdays.
Picnic tables, folded chairs,
We gather here with grateful prayers.
Freedom rings in every cheer,
But someone we love isn’t here.
They’re the brave in the sky, the stars in our song,
The reason this country keeps standing so strong.
From the hills to the waves,
To the names etched in stone —
We remember, we honor, we’re never alone.
On this day, on this May —
Memorial Day.
Boots on the porch that never came back,
Letters worn soft in a cedarwood stack.
Gold star moms with hands held tight,
Telling stories by candlelight.
It’s not just barbecues and bands,
It’s folded flags in trembling hands.
So we sing with love and pride,
For those who stood and never died — they ride…
As the brave in the sky, the stars in our song,
The reason this country keeps standing so strong.
From the hills to the waves,
To the names etched in stone —
We remember, we honor, we’re never alone.
On this day, on this May —
Memorial Day.
So light a flame, let it burn through the night,
Whisper their names in the soft twilight.
Tell your children why we pray,
On this sacred, golden day.
They’re the brave in the sky, the stars in our song,
The beat in our hearts as we carry on.
We plant the flag, we kneel and say:
Thank you for the price you paid.
From this land of the free — to where heroes lay —
We remember, forever…
This Memorial Day.

oldtom9 Added Good Morning! Thank you and thank you for this wonderful hymn to our fallen and quick military men and women. On Friday I was lamenting that I could not buy a flag or a poppy from a veteran. To my joy, on Saturday morning a group of veterans were outside a strip shopping center in Valley Cottage, New York with the poppies and the flags. May we never lose this part of Americana which reminds and brings forth to our younger generations how we preserve our nation. I pray for these people each day and again, thank you, for this hymn.
