Description

André Rieu, JSO & The Harlem Gospel Choir performing Nun's Chorus (Live at the Radio City Music Hall New York).

"I will never forget my concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York, it’s here I performed the stand-out hit from Strauss’ operetta Casanova, the Nun’s Chorus. As you know Casanova was one of histories most famous lovers. But did you also know that as a young man he trained to be a priest! With his good looks he would seduce the women of his congregation and turn the heads of the nuns in the convent. And this aria tells the story of a young nun torn between her duty to God and her love for Casanova. In my performance the Nun’s Choir features the ladies from the Harlem Gospel Choir!"

The "Nun's Chorus" (original German: "Nonnenchor") is a beautiful and serene piece of music by Johann Strauss II, but it became most famous in the context of Franz Lehár's operetta "Casanova", where it was later adapted.

The melody of the Nun’s Chorus comes from Johann Strauss II’s operetta "Cagliostro in Wien", composed in 1875. Decades later, the operetta fell into obscurity, but the music lived on. Franz Lehár, a leading operetta composer, adapted some of Strauss's music — including this piece — into a new operetta, "Casanova" (1928). In Casanova, the piece became famous as the "Nun’s Chorus", featuring a group of nuns singing in a convent setting.
