The decade following World War II was characterized by economic growth, the emergence of the Cold War, and the beginning of the civil rights movement in the United States. In 1945, then-British Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared, "America at this moment stands at the summit of the world." In retrospect, it is clear what Churchill was getting at in the 1950s. The United States had the most powerful military in the world. New automobiles, suburban homes, and other consumer goods were within reach of more people than ever before because to the country's thriving economy. The 1950s, however, were also a time of significant war. During the Korean War, for instance, the fight against communism both at home and abroad shed light on long-suppressed racial and class tensions in the United States.

Surprises me no mention of the crinoline petticoats we all wore to hold those skirts out! Lordy the problems of starching & hanging them on the clothesline to dry should merit some mention. Not uncommon to wear 3/4 at a time depending on what skirt one was wearing. Don't know of another time in history where high school girls wore skirts that stood away from body so far! Born in 1940 so all seems very familiar even tho not a single shot from Texas. Think city centers all looked alike back then. Truly a golden age to grow up in.
Born in 1942. A teenager in the mid to late 50's. Looking back at history the 50's were, and remain FABULOUS. I play a form of Name That Tune at senior centers around town and the 50's music is by far the most requested.
I started dating my future Husband in the 1950's and we got married in the 1950's
the 50's were the BEST! I'm 87 and out of all of the decades, those were GREAT times..Want them back!
MEETING MY FUTURE WIFE JOANNE
I enjoyed it, but I was born in November 1936.
It's always fun to relive time of the 50's, because it was the best time to be alive. We had fun with our friends, and life was simple. It's a shame that kids today will never know the feeling of living the way we did. The traditional way of life no longer exist, and we as a country are heading into a world we no longer recognize
I miss tadpoles swimming between my toes. My old car, roller-skates. Boots my dog. We had tent revivals. Good food and wounder bread. Last of all. the friends who we lost in passing or just time.
I miss 5 cent candy and soft drinks. 25 cent movies and 19 cent popcorn. Most of all the respect folks had for each other. The cars of those days and how we discussed which was the best.
Great times and memories growing up then!
Enjoyable. But it reminded me of conditions in the U.K. Rationing on food fuel and clothing finally came to an end. But few people had any money any way, So not a lot changed.
Those were the best day's of my life. I fill so sorry for the younger generation coming up. There is so much evil in this world today. Please keep the younger generation in your prayers.
I loved the trip down memory lane. I wish that we could bring a few of those ideals back today in this world of hate, division, mass shootings, complete lack of morals, lack of proper punishments for all that commit crimes and disregard of others' beliefs. Thank you for a few minutes of smiles. Thanks Mel!
It was a safer stable America where traditional values, love of country, family, and respect for self and others was a constant. Today we have cultural Marxism.
Much too poor time for me. Gladly would love to take a pass on that nasty time.
Loved the 50's. So many good things, graduated high school in 1952, . Gotrmarried a year later, and moved from Minnesota to Washington. Packed all we could in our 2 door airplane nosed Studebaker and started our new life. Bought out first home. So many great memories.

What awesome pictures! I was born in 1949 and I remember vividly the 50's. What a simpler time and so many family-oriented activities. Sunday-afternoon drives with my folks never knowing where we might end up was a favorite of mine and of course family meals together
,sometimes at my grandparent's house. I remember the excitement of converting from black n white TV to COLOR! Thanks for the fond memories Mel.
Enjoyed the look back. I grew up in the 50's. Graduated in 57. I am so thankful I grew up in that time period.
