Why does a piano have black and white keys instead of one simple row of identical keys? The answer goes back centuries, long before the modern piano was invented.

In this video, we explore how early keyboard instruments shaped the familiar keyboard layout, why black keys appear in groups of two and three, and why some notes have no black key between them.

She came along because her husband said she’d been feeling a little down, but nobody quite knew what would happen once she took the microphone. A familiar old TV theme song turns into something much bigger than a street performance.

Back in the day, pianists often didn’t have access to perfectly tuned, pristine pianos. Instead, they played on old, out-of-tune pianos in saloons, barrelhouses and honky-tonks, instruments with plenty of character.
In my own song "Honky Tonk Blues", I wanted to recreate a little bit of that sound and atmosphere on my old piano at home in the Dominican Republic.
